How creating art with an Art Therapist can help you feel more empowered.

San Diego Art Therapist Blog

This blog has been updated from the original February 8, 2021 post.

This blog was originally written while the world was amid the pandemic. For several years, the one thing that stood out was the undeniable losses people were experiencing.

Many different types of losses. Loss of normalcy, loss of physical contact, loss of income and jobs, loss of large, gathered celebrations for weddings, anniversaries, and graduations. The loss of hopes and dreams, and the loss of lives.

Many people are still trying to recover from those years. You may be one of them. You’re not alone.

Feeling powerless is common in the face of loss.

Many feelings accompany loss. When we lose something important, there is a void. It can be such a powerless feeling. The death of a loved one is the hardest to grapple with.  It feels overwhelming to be caught in a storm surge of grief. Wave after wave crashes over you.  While death is part of life, it is a painful, powerless part.

While talk therapy can be extremely helpful, it can leave you feeling like a passive bystander rather than an active participant. I witnessed this in my life and the lives of others I have helped walk through loss.

What I have observed, working as a Therapist in San Marcos, CA providing Art Therapy in San Diego North County is remarkable resiliency amid grief.

As you read this, you may reflect on the losses you and your family have experienced. They may have been in the past, or they may be recent. You may wonder, “How can creating art with an art therapist help me feel more empowered”?

My passion for Art Therapy began with my experience with an art therapist. She helped me more fully integrate and make meaning of the losses in my life. Now I work to help others in ways I found so profoundly helpful.

Creating art in Art Therapy testifies to your agency despite feeling powerless.

In the earlier years of my therapy career, I had the sacred experience of working with hospice patients and their family members.  I have rich memories of the art created by adults and children in the context of art therapy sessions. I witnessed how making choices while grieving is an act of the will.

Creating art with an Art Therapist can help you overcome the inertia you feel and calm anxiety that accompanies events beyond your control. By its nature, loss is subtractive. We see what is missing or gone. Creating can feel additive as we birth something new.
