The grief is heavy and overwhelming for you and your child.

All you could think about today was how sad you felt.  This person you loved so much, and depended on, is gone.  Your heart feels beyond broken. Broken for yourself and for your children.

How will you get out of bed tomorrow to face another day?  You wonder how you will show up for your children when you’re filled with so much grief.

You’re really worried about your children, especially your quietest one.

You just want everyone to be okay. To get through this, to cope the best you all can. Yet, you have one child who holds everything inside, all bottled up.  You try to talk about the loss, but conversations go nowhere.

Child grief counseling can help a child cope.

Feelings can be scary for children. They don’t want to have big feelings. Sometimes they don’t know what to do with them. They don’t want to make you feel sadder, or worried about them.

It feels safer to hide what they’re feeling. And the truth is, while you might usually be a great support in helping them manage their feelings—you don’t have it right now.

My name is Tami and I help elementary school-aged kids who bottle up their feelings.  Through the use of Art Therapy, I make it easier for grieving children to express their sadness, anger, and fears so they can get back to being a kid.

Healing takes time… and sometimes healing also needs the help of a Child Therapist.

During my time working with Hospice organizations in San Diego, I helped many bereaved children. Just like healing from a physical injury, I learned that healing from a loss takes time.

In therapy, joining with children in a way that helps them feel safe is paramount. This is especially true when emotions feel so big.

I create a quiet, healing environment

Whether it’s getting down on the floor to create a drawing or sitting on the couch reading a book, therapy needs to feel like a calming place. A place where your child can begin to share their thoughts about what happened, and what they’re experiencing.

This can open the door for more sharing at home.

Children often say they were nervous about coming to therapy for the first time. Later they share how they had fun and learned ways to cope while in therapy. I also work to support and encourage parents. I know that bringing a child to therapy can feel very vulnerable.

Child Therapy for Grieving Children in San Marcos, CA

Children are amazingly resilient. Yet, they also feel all the feelings we struggle with as adults and often don’t know what to do with those feelings.

Art Therapy is a natural and developmentally appropriate way to help elementary school-aged children approach grief and loss issues.
