San Diego North County is a great place to raise kids. So many wonderful opportunities. Award-winning schools, beaches, hiking trails, and lots of near-perfect weather. While San Marcos may be known as a family-friendly community within North County, not all the kids here are happy and relaxed.

Life happens and you find you need some support, especially with your kids. If you are looking for a therapist in San Marcos, I’d like to help.

Help with finding a Child Therapist in San Marcos

There are a lot of therapists in San Diego County, and many of them list that they work with children. It can be a difficult task to sort through all the names. It’s also time-consuming to visit and read websites and reviews.  By the way, you may have noticed that there are not a ton of reviews for mental health providers. Therapists generally cannot ask clients to provide reviews due to the nature of the client-therapist relationship.  Leaving you, the consumer with less information to make your decision.

Here is a list of 5 tips that I would give my friends to help narrow down the list of San Diego Child Therapy providers.

  1. Seek out a specialist whose main focus is providing therapy for children. Many therapists are more like general practitioners who see all ages.

  2. Set up a consultation to speak with the therapist. Many offer a complimentary consultation where you can get a feel for whether the therapist would be a good match for your situation.

  3. Ask about the therapist’s experience and training with children and the specific issues that are bringing you to therapy.

  4. Look for a therapist who understands how difficult it is to be a parent. Parents need support through challenges, not judgment.

  5. Talk to several therapists. You want to work with someone that you and your child feel comfortable with. A connection that leads to trust is key to good outcomes.

While child therapy may be needed, also consider that you may just need support as a parent. A place to talk through issues that are coming up at home and how to navigate. Therapists who work with children, often provide parent support or coaching.
